Saliva testing for breast cancer

Abnormal PALB2 genes are suspected to raise the risk of ovarian cancer, but larger studies need to confirm that risk. Men with these mutations have an increased risk of breast cancer, especially if the BRCA2 gene is affected, and possibly of prostate cancer. Many inherited cases of breast cancer have been associated with mutations in these three genes. But when these genes contain the mutations that are passed from generation to generation, they do not function normally and breast cancer risk increases. Most people who develop breast cancer have no family history of the disease. Some people choose to undergo genetic testing to find out.

Genetic Testing: BRCA1, BRCA2, and PALB2 Mutations

People who inherit mutations in these genes are at an increased risk of developing breast cancer and ovarian cancer compared with the general population. The BRCA gene test is offered to those who are likely to have an inherited mutation based on personal or family history of breast cancer or ovarian cancer. The BRCA gene test isn't routinely performed on people at average risk of breast and ovarian cancers. The results of genetic testing aren't always clear. A positive result means you carry a gene mutation that increases your risk of cancer and you can work with your doctor to manage that risk. A negative result may mean that you don't have the mutation or that you might have a gene mutation doctors haven't discovered yet.

Simple saliva test could predict breast-cancer risk: study

All data generated or analyzed during this study are included in this published article. Breast cancer screening programs seem to be an insufficient tool for women at high genetic risk for breast cancer. These women are not adequately monitored yet. Genetic testing may improve clearly the quality of breast cancer prevention programs.
Jolie decided to have a pre-emptive double mastectomy, raising awareness about the r ole of genetics in predicting cancer risk for women around the world. I made a decision to have a preventive double mastectomy. Since then, interest in genetic testing for all types of cancer has increased, but until recently, such testing had to be done in a doctor's office or specialty lab.
