Digital anal stimulis

Digital stimulation is a way to empty the reflex bowel after a spinal cord injury. It may also be called a "dil. By doing this, the the bowel reflex is stimulated and the rectal muscles open and allow the stool to leave the body. This procedure is best done on people who do not have painful sensation in the rectal area. The dil should be done at the same time every day or every other day to stay on a schedule and avoid bowel accidents.

We speculated that defecation induced by such a technique is mediated through a reflex mechanism. The anal canal was dilated by a balloon inflated in 2-mL increments to 10 mL, and rectal pressure response was then recorded. The test was repeated after separate block of the external and internal anal sphincters and after individual anesthetization of the anal canal and rectum. The rectal pressure rise occurred with external, but not with internal, sphincter paralysis. Internal sphincter inhibition, in contrast to the external sphincter, produced no rectal pressure response. In both normal subjects and subjects with paraplegia, the rectal pressure response did not occur after individual anesthetization of the rectum and anal canal.

Digital Stimulation

Stimulation of the anal canal and lower rectum, accomplished using a gloved finger so-called digital rectal stimulation or DRS is often used as an adjunct to laxatives and enemas to facilitate bowel evacuation. However, the basis for the efficacy of DRS is not known. This study assessed the effect of DRS on colonic motility. Six subjects with SCI were studied several hours after a bowel care session. Colonic motility was assessed using a manometric catheter affixed endoscopically to the splenic flexure at baseline, during DRS, and after DRS.
A program of bowel retraining, Kegel exercises , or biofeedback therapy may be used by people to help improve their bowel movements. The bowel program includes several steps to help you have regular bowel movements. Most people are able to have regular bowel movements within a few weeks.
